OLD SALTY
What looked to be a scraper, this cabin in Seaside, OR was ripe for rescue-with rooms enveloped in bead board, a large wraparound porch and light coming in on all sides. What it lacked was coziness, structural stability, and important basics like heating and operable windows. All of that changed with a whole house remodel. We made sure there were plenty of sleeping areas by adding built-in bunks, and turned the attic into a new master suite with wraparound windows. Vintage and second-hand design details add an authentic patina to the house, including the old stove and fridge in the kitchen. And all beach cabins need space for a group feast, but the original enclosed porch felt cold and empty. With a few design strokes it was re-envisioned as a “captain’s quarters” dining room.
